Present Tense                                                                                                                                                                              

Simple Present Tense

Hindi sentences of this tense have the following ending words:

ta hai, te hain, tee hai

·         Used in: Routine activity, Universal truths, Habits, Frequently Done Activities

Keywords: always, daily, every day, nowadays, these days, sometimes, seldom, often, normally , usually, generally, frequently  

  See the following sentences:

(A) Morning Routine of Rohit                                                             

·         Rohit  gets up early in the morning at 5 a.m.

·         First of all, he brushes his teeth and then goes to a nearby park.

·         He walks for half an hour daily in the morning.

·         He also does some physical exercises and yoga there in the park.

·         Then he returns home.

·         After that, he does other routine activities and goes to school.

(B) Habitual Truths

       1. Mohit starts dancing when he gets some happy news.

       2. Amit always sings songs while bathing.

       3. Mrs. X starts back-biting others when she talks to any of her neighbours.

       4. Some children spoil the walls of their houses and even of their schools by writing with pencils and pens.

(C) Facts/ General truth

(i)                  Truth always wins in the long run.

(ii)                Honesty is the best policy.

(iii)               The sun rises in the East and sets in the West.

(iv)              Cold wind blows in the winter season.

(v)                Diwali comes in the month of October or November every year.

(vi)              Water boils at 100 degrees C.

(vii)             If you touch fire, it burns your hand.

How to make sentences of Present Simple Tense

1. Positive Sentences/ affirmative sentences:

(a) To make the positive sentences of this tense ‘s’ or ‘es’ is added to the base form of the verb if the subjects are :

He, she, it, and Mohan (Third person singular nouns).

For example

·         He goes to school daily.

The base form of the verb is ‘go’: go + es

‘s’ or ‘es’ is added to the base form of the verb

(b) To make the positive sentences of this tense, ‘s’ or ‘es’ is not added to the base form of the verb if the subjects are :

I, we ( 1ST PERSON), you (2ND PERSON), they, Mohan and Sohan (Third person plural nouns).

For example

(i)                  I work hard to get excellent marks.

(ii)                We go to school daily.

Negative/Interrogative sentences:

(i)                 Use does+1st form of the verb if the subjects are: he, she, it, and singular third-person nouns. Example:

a. He does not go to school daily.

b. Does he go to school daily?

c. Why does he not go to school daily?

(i)                 Use do + 1st form of the verb if the subjects are: I, we, you, they and plural nouns. Examples:

(a)    I do not go to school daily.

(b)   They do not go to school daily.

© Do they go to school daily?

Exercise:

1. She always criticises her husband.

2. Atul’s father never tells a lie.

3. We want to study now.

4. What do you want?

5. Where do you go every Sunday?

6. She and her sister frequently go to see a movie.

7. Rajesh does a lot of hard work in his fields.

8. Birds fly high in the sky when the sky is overcast with dark clouds.

9. Dogs bark if any stranger comes in our street.

10. If you stare at a dog, it barks.

Conversation in Simple Present Tense

Teacher: What do you do to keep your teeth safe and healthy?

Students:

Teacher: What five activities do you do after getting up from bed in the morning?

Student:

Teacher: What do you do and what should you do when someone keeps on teasing you?

Student:

Teacher: What do you do to remove sleep from your eyes when you feel sleepy in the morning?

Student:   

Teacher: If you have to take bath with cold water in winter, what would you do?

Student: 

Teacher:  What types of friends do you like?

 Student:  

Teacher: If a friend of yours keeps on disturbing you when you are busy doing your work, what would you say to him/her?

Student:  

Teacher: What eatables do you usually like to eat?

Student:

Teacher: Tell me about the activities you would like to do if you have ample time?

Student:

Teacher: Tell me about the actions you do not want to do?

Student:

Teacher: Tell me something about the fruit you like most?

Student:
