PART A: INTERJECTIONS

1. What is an Interjection?

 

An interjection is a word or a group of words that expresses a sudden feeling or emotion such as joy, sorrow, surprise, pain, fear, approval, or anger.

 

Interjections have no grammatical connection with the rest of the sentence.

 

Examples:

 

1.Oh! I forgot my book.

 

2.Alas! The old man is dead.

 

3.Wow! What a beautiful painting!

 

Interjections are often followed by an exclamation mark (!).

 

2. Types of Interjections

(A) Interjections of Joy or Pleasure

 

Used to express happiness or delight.

 

Examples: hurrah, bravo, wow

 

1.Hurrah! We won the match.

 

2.Bravo! You have done well.

 

(B) Interjections of Sorrow or Pain

 

Used to express sadness, grief, or pain.

 

Examples: alas, oh, ah

 

1.Alas! He failed the examination.

 

2.Oh! I have hurt my leg.

 

(C) Interjections of Surprise or Wonder

 

Used to show shock or amazement.

 

Examples: oh, ah, wow

 

1.Oh! What a strange sight!

 

2.Wow! This building is very tall.

 

(D) Interjections of Approval or Praise

 

Used to show approval or encouragement.

 

Examples: well done, bravo

 

Well done! You answered correctly.

 

(E) Interjections of Attention

 

Used to draw attention.

 

Examples: hello, listen, look

 

1.Hello! Is anyone there?

 

2.Listen! Someone is calling you.
